Virtualization is Key: Virtualize All Aspects of your Business

Recent Gartner research shows that while 80-90% of enterprises have deployed some kind of virtual technology in their data center, very few have virtualized their entire infrastructure.

What do IT leaders think – does it every make sense to virtualize all aspects of your business?

Cloud Computing: Innovative or Disruptive?

Some say exploring the cloud can be confusing and overwhelming.

“Cloud computing is merely a buzzword placed on a delivery model that has been around for years.”

“Customers aren’t willing to dive into cloud computing because it just isn’t mature enough yet.”

“The cloud has gotten way more attention than it deserves. Can we finally move on?”

–       Quotes from Forbes.com and InfoWorld.com

Some say cloud computing can benefit today’s forward-looking organizations.

“Cloud computing is first and foremost about business innovation through technology, not the other way around. It results from a combination of seemingly marginal technology innovations that collectively deliver a game-changing business model for developing, deploying and maintaining software.”

“The cloud [is] a safe place for enterprise applications.”

“Cloud providers take advantage of economies of scale, and in so doing can provide services that, for the SMB market, were heretofore impossible to acquire.”

–       Quotes from eBiz.com, DataCenterJournal.com and SearchCloudComputing.com

Just-In-Time-Training: Here to Stay or Just About to Go?

Some say that we’re about to see a revolution in just-in-time-training (JITT), especially with developments of cloud-based technology. This training enables people to use their laptops, cell phones and tablet computers as a tool to receive training right when they need it.

The argument for JITT is that the current training model many businesses are using takes people away from their jobs and costs the company money.  Sometimes, the advanced training employees receive won’t ever be needed, or it might not be needed for an extended period of time.

However, with just-in-time training, companies can keep people in the field without the specific training. When the person needs a certain skill set, they can get the training in real time with cloud-based technology.  For example, a repair person could get real-time training on his smartphone for an issue he runs across on the spot.  If he needs more assistance, he can access a “help” tool to connect to the master repairperson, live.  He can put on a headband with a digital, high-resolution camera, which interfaces with the mobile device, and show the master repairperson exactly what the issue is, while the master repairperson guides him in real time.

Tell us what you think: is JITT the next big thing?

Virtualizing Your Desktop: Secure, All-Access Data Anytime?

Plenty of companies are transforming their desktops with VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), an infrastructure creating a space outside desktops, tablets and other devices that allows you to securely store and access data anywhere.

  • VDI lasts longer and costs less than a traditional desktop
  • VDI is easy to patch and upgrade
  • VDI encourages remote work, resulting in higher productivity.

Many experts say VDI isn’t for everyone (at least not yet).

What do you think: does VDI success lie in choosing the right model for your business, or is it just Hype?

Efficiency on Demand?

There never seems to be enough staff or enough time to do the proactive projects IT leaders want to do, much less the creative projects the business side wants IT leaders to do.

CFOs have ordered a 15% cut across the board, and IT leaders find themselves selecting the best option from a list of unpleasant options.

Many IT leaders are using a fully-staffed, state-of-the-art IT department, provided as a managed service (and at a price point midsize companies can afford).

Some say it’s a quick fix for a short-term crisis, and being responsible for IT means  doing everything yourself – on servers in your office, and by staff you can see working.

What do you think… is managed services Hype or Ripe?
