4 steps to realizing supercomputing

By Paul Abram, Data Center Practice Leader, and Nick Turk, Solution Architect

In our previous blog, we looked at the history of supercomputing and how rapidly advancing technology has brought us to the new era of affordable supercomputing.

In this edition, we’ll discuss what you can expect during your supercomputing journey—including the questions you should be prepared to answer from the start. We’ll tell you why a proven process helps ensure your high-performance data analytics (HPDA) and high-performance computing (HPC) solution is affordable and easy to adopt at your organization. And we’ll divulge which technologies you should be using as part of your supercomputing solution.

Preparing for your supercomputing journey

It can be easy to get overwhelmed when taking on an initiative with so many components and parts, such as supercomputing. That’s why we start all our projects with a standard set of questions so we can better understand your environments, goals and requirements.

Here are the topics and questions you should be prepared to discuss:

  • Applications: What are my analytical requirements and goals—for both today and tomorrow?
  • Data: Where are my data sources and what are my dependencies?
  • Middleware: Which databases, warehouses, lakes and workflow engines will we be working with?
  • Resources: What are my requirements for compute, memory and storage?
  • Network: Do I know my security, network and audit requirements? If so, what are they?
  • Data protection: Do I have the right backup and recovery services in place?
  • Management: What are my infrastructure management specifications?
  • Migration: Have I established my data migration strategy?

These questions not only help you be prepared, they also serve as part of our first step in our four-step, prescriptive, proprietary design approach for creating your HPDA/HPC solution.

Following a proven process for HPDA and HPC solutions

Our approach includes four steps of designing, developing, deploying and managing your solution. When considering partners to help you build your HPDA/HPC solution, be sure to ask what type of process they follow. Using an established process can often increase efficiency and lower costs.

Here’s a preview of the process we follow:

  1. Assess

We examine your environment to understand your requirements, which technologies you have now and what you’ll need in the future. This step is where we will go through the questions we covered above. Preparing answers to these questions in advance can sometimes accelerate the project schedule.

  1. Design

We design your solution by leveraging our expertise and experience with similar initiatives. We work with you to define the best way to get from where you are today to where you want to be and how quickly you want to get there. Be sure to always ask your possible partner about successful case studies they’ve completed in this area.

  1. Implement

We build out your new HPDA/HPC solution and implement it with our partners that offer best-in-class infrastructure and software/middleware solutions.

  1. Manage

We offer support to allow your team to focus on your core supercomputing mission. No one wants to be stranded with questions after implantation with no help in sight. Check to see if your partner can provide managed services for troubleshooting and support.

Deciding on the best technologies

As part of our design approach, we help you decide the best technologies to use and enable you to leverage our partnerships with industry leaders, including:

  • IBM
  • SAP
  • Information Builders
  • Mellanox and Hortonworks for Hadoop
  • Tech Data

Putting it all together: Logicalis High-Performance Data Analytics Services

Even the best software and hardware solutions on the market won’t help you meet your supercomputing goals if you don’t have a trusted partner helping you along the way.
