To Allow or Not Allow End Users to Download Software?

According to Network World, a new survey shows that IT leaders are split on the decision to allow end users to download and install software.  To keep malware off their networks, some IT and security pros restrict end users’ rights to install applications on company machines, and the majority restrict the individual applications that are allowed on the network. Of those polled, 51% said yes, allow users to install applications, 49% said no, according to the survey of 765 professionals by security vendor Bit9.

What do you think – allow end users to download and install applications (Ripe) or prevent them from doing so (Hype)?

We’d love to hear your experiences in the comments below.
